Day 3 of #StrengthenTheAsana brings us to Chaturunga. A pose performed during Vinyasa classes, and Sun Salutations primarily.
Chatungura is one of the easiest poses to injure yourself in over time if performed without the proper foundation.
I am a FIRM BELIEVER of not practicing full chaturunga if you do not have the strength for it.
The body will naturally over compensate by dumping weight into the shoulders, or by keeping the booty sticking way up in the air during this pose.
To test how low you should go in Chaturunga: can you push back up into a high plank from your Chaturunga? If you can’t— you are too low or dumping weight.
I teach to most of my students a modified version of Charturunga (what they used to call in gym class: a girl push up) until they have built up the strength through practice and drills to perform the full expression of the pose.
The best thing we can do for ourselves is admire where we are, love that space and create more strength. .
